Can I Have a More Organized Home in 4 Weeks? Days 9 and 10

I’m following along with the Money Saving Mom’s series 4 Weeks to a More Organized Home (Simplified) and linking my daily progress here.  obviously, this time around it will be two days worth of progress.  I had to throw the blog in the backseat yesterday and Thursday because between preparing for a birthday party and working my shift at the school book fair I had to let some things slide.  Here are the assignments from Thursday and Friday and how I fared on them:

Get dressed in something that makes you feel great

I was on a purple kick the past two days!  I wore my 2 purple shirts.  The weather has been really nice so both were short-sleeved.  I’m still waiting for a chance to check out the e-book suggestion of Frumps to Pumps.   This assignment and the one listed below seem to be at the top of each list.  I’m starting to see a pattern there…while I must confess today is all about sweatpants for me.

Sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, refer to your list of weekly goals, and make a list of no more than 5-7 specific things you want to accomplish today

I should probably be doing these two things in the morning but that’s not exactly how Thursday or Friday went for me.  I took Thursday (it was J’s 8th birthday) off from the book fair to run errands and I caved in and treated myself to one of these (I was in the store too early to take advantage of the buy 1 get 1 free Starbucks deal):

I have no control when it comes to soda so although our store has these cans marked 4/$1, I will only buy ONE every once in a while. I can’t wait until they are gone so I won’t be tempted anymore.

I am sure there is not a real correlation but I did have a bit of a sore throat by the time of the soccer party Thursday evening.  Yesterday, I was back to drinking Emergen-C although I wasn’t sitting down but rather running about in a mad dash making birthday party preparations and trying to fix a cake-tastrophe.  I have rather limited talent in the cake decorating department!  This was the mess of a Minecraft cake I had after my first attempt:

This is apparently not an acceptable look for Minecraft TNT

When the boys arrived home from school yesterday, they helped me out by making suggestions and taking over some decorating chores so that the final product was presentable.  As long as J was happy with the final cake, I was happy.

Minecraft TNT cake after the boys helped me. Yes, I did scrape the entire top off the cake. I saved it though for us to eat today!

The cake itself tasted fine and is a family birthday cake recipe that I plan on sharing in an upcoming post.   Thankfully, the assignments from the past two days weren’t too difficult.

Set the timer for 15 minutes and do a quick-clean of your bathroom

We just did this one last week and while the bathroom did need cleaned again, it wasn’t in awful shape.  I took the time to find a new home for the fallen shelf and clean the floor plus clean our bedroom bathroom a bit.  The other task for Wednesday which I’m not listing out separately was to wipe off the light switch plates.  I had already completed that on doorknob day so I didn’t worry about it.

A clean bathroom!

The main task from yesterday really needed to be done even though it was a bit daunting.

Dust all ceiling fans and clean all light fixtures in your home.  Check for burned out light bulbs and replace.

I did this somewhat.  Our fans were dusty!  I started out using my multipurpose wipes which didn’t work too well.  Then I switched to using my Swifter duster and thinking maybe I should break down and buy an extender one.   I also tried the pillowcase method of dusting them which worked fairly well and did save me from getting any more dust in my eyes.

That is after dusting 1 ceiling fan. Yikes!

My husband had already removed the light fixture on our kitchen light (note: the duster above is NOT from the kitchen ceiling fan) and it was the one ceiling fan in the house that wasn’t all that bad with dust.

Set the timer for 15 minutes and do something you really enjoy that relaxes and rejuvenates you

That didn’t happen yesterday as it was simply too busy of a day to sit down and really do that one.  However, we are having a relaxing do nothing Saturday (well, not my husband as he had to work) so I think I’ll end up with more than 15 minutes spent on that task over all by the end of today.    I have big plans to read a couple of books,  finish writing a couple of blog posts–I have several “in process”, and get caught up on our laundry which despite being on my daily list every day is somehow overflowing yet again!

This series takes the week of Thanksgiving off and I am rather grateful for that one.   How are you doing in your cleaning efforts?  Also, please tell me that I’m not the only one who has ever had a cake decorating “cake-tastrophe”?

Clearly, I didn’t know what a Minecraft cake was supposed to look like either 😉 It was actually the same cake but I had removed the top layer to let them “redecorate”. The cake is actually supposed to be a 3 layer cake but we ended up with a 2 layer cake so yes, we did eat it. Wouldn’t be nice if we only had to clean the stuff at eye-level? Of course, that’s what I usually do which explains the ceiling fans being so nasty!

It’s good to know that others are following along each day (and sometimes doing multiple days tasks in a single day as time permits) and enjoying the series along with me. I wish you good luck in relaxing with books and blog posts this weekend and look forward to joining you each day for the series the week after Thanksgiving. Goodness knows our homes may need a pick me up after a week without cleaning challenges right?

Yes, I think my home is going to need a serious pick me up after next week with all of us home for 3 days! I do feel like the those first two items on the list have become habit though so perhaps we’ll surprise ourselves. We can always hope right?

I’m pretty hopeless at cake decorating unless it’s uber-simple. Isn’t it funny how our kids can know so much more than us when it comes to their interests? 😉 Sounds like you got a whole lot done, and I’m glad you’re having a do-nothing (or almost nothing) Saturday.

Well, the sad part is I have taken a cake decorating class! It was years (LOTS of years) ago and I never really excelled at it (I guess that would be obvious LOL). It was funny watching my boys get to work making suggestions to save the cake decor. Oh, I see you posted about your 5K…I’ll have to go read your blog and see how it went for you 🙂
