Mocha in a Minute

So we have lots of snow on the ground around here after the last snowstorm of 2012.  Our first real snowfall came the week before Christmas and gifted the boys with an early present in the form of a couple of snow days.  Of course, I sent them out to play in it while I stayed inside and made hot chocolate.  It’s no secret that this is not my favorite time of the year but I do enjoy the hot chocolate it brings.  More specifically, I enjoy the excuse to enjoy a tall peppermint mocha from Starbucks (one of my birthday presents this year was a Starbucks gift card and I am really enjoying it!).  However, going out on a snow day with two kids who love to be at home just so mom can have  fancy coffee drink does not happen here.  I sent the kids out shortly after breakfast and as I started to prepare their hot chocolates using a mix (I agree that homemade is better but sometimes you just want things that are quick and easy), I had a thought.

I prefer Swiss Miss when I am using a mix.

I wasn’t going anywhere to buy myself a mocha that morning but I wondered about making my own mocha but keeping it simple.  I didn’t want to follow any long over the top recipe.

I had a little bit of coffee left in the coffeepot.

I had a hot chocolate packet.

I emptied the hot chocolate packet into the bottom of my mug (these are our special hot chocolate mugs in the pictures) and filled it with the hot coffee from the coffee pot.  I stirred it well and then added an extra bit of milk to the cup.

My mocha in a minute certainly wouldn’t compete with a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha but it was definitely warm, rich, and chocolatey plus had all the caffeine I needed to make it through the snow day!   The price was right as well.  What is your go-to homemade drink for the cold weather?

They are really good aren’t they? I kept thinking if I had some peppermint extract that maybe that would make my homemade stuff taste a little closer to one.

Now, that sounds good but probably wouldn’t be the correct choice for 10:30a.m. on a snow day 😉 Maybe at 10:30p.m. that night…

Thanks! Roads have been cleared for a couple days now and the boys go back to school tomorrow! It is time.
