Synopsis of a Snow Day, part 1

School is back in session today and I’m stuck at home unless I want to walk as the city left a lovely snow wall of pretty much solid ice at the end of our driveway.   Not too much major complaining though because school is back in session today!   I am basically going to spend today playing catch-up after playing in the snow for a couple of days.  I thought it might be fun for those of you who live in warmer climates where snow days don’t exist to hear about our snow days.  I hear in some cooler climates, the snow days don’t exist either.  They apparently bundle kids up in snow pants and boots and send them to school anyway.  There were certainly points during the past couple days where I would have been okay with that.   (Note:   my camera date stamp is wrong.  These pictures are from Tuesday and Wednesday, not Monday).

View out our front door during Thursday's snowfall. About another 12 inches fell on top of the 12 inches that was already out there.

This is the view out the back door. Would you believe there are a couple of soccer balls buried under all that snow?

The snow had stopped for a bit when I snapped this picture.

You would think that with all that snow, everyone would sleep late.  However, on Wednesday, everyone was up early.  I tried to pretend to sleep until about 8:30a.m. or so.  We then did the video game/television routine for probably much longer than necessary.  Eventually, we went outside for a bit.   My accomplishment of the day was talking to a neighbor with a kindergarten son and finally exchanging phone numbers which we’ve needed to do for the longest time.  I also found out the neighbor grew up in the Chicago area and was building a cool igloo for her children.   We all stayed out playing in the snow until about lunchtime.

This little kitty changed his mind and came back inside his warm home.

Chicken strips for lunch on our first snow day. There are few complaints about what is for lunch after being outside in the snow for a bit.

The kitchen clean-up crew never arrived. SIGH.

Shortly after lunch, the call came.  No school on Wednesday either.  I believe my response was something along the lines of “oh, happy day!” and not, ahem…”You have GOT to be kidding!”.  I’ll leave it up to you to decide on the accurate response.  I do however remember back in the “olden days” when we actually had to get up at the crack of dawn and watch the news in the morning to see whether or not we were going to school.   That was rough when your school name started with an “R”…my kids and their early in the alphabet school district name and automated phone calls.  They just don’t know how good they have it 😉

Honestly, we did not do anything overly exciting with our first snow day.  Have I mentioned we spent too much time playing video games (the boys) and watching Netflix (the boys didn’t appreciate all the zombie survival tips I was picking up from The Walking Dead while I didn’t appreciate the fighting over the X-Box).  I tried to get J into bed at a decent hour which turned out to be 10p.m. and let G stay up playing yet more X-Box until about 11p.m.  I stayed up until about midnight watching just one more episode of The Walking Dead.

I did realize at some point during the day, that snow day 2 would need a bit more action…so if you are wondering, stay tuned for the synopsis of our second snow day.

LOL! No they don’t have a clue! Manya morning I remember being in front of the tv on some public channel with bad music and a blue background waiting for Yolanda to scroll across the screen. Kids have it made though as a parent I am glad for the phone calls too, it has made life easier. Looks like y’all had lots off fluffy snow to play with though! I’m sure that was fun!

Yes, it is nice being able to think we are going to sleep in the next day even if it doesn’t actually happen. It was fun but I’m sure ready for the next season to get here.
