Today is supposed to be the first day of our new summer routine except my boys are still asleep! They’ve slept through “free time” and are busily snoozing through “breakfast and get ready for the day” time. I think I may have to adjust today’s schedule a bit because even I think it would be a bit of a bummer to wake up in the middle of “clean your room” time. It was nice to have some peace and quiet with my coffee though.
Last week, I based our menu off what was in the pantry and freezer and did okay with it. I can’t say we followed it the whole week but we did make it until Thursday when I broke and ended up making the boys go on a quick grocery store run with me. I think I broke all the rules on that trip, hungry, at lunch time, no plan…it provided for an interesting and Lunchable-filled weekend (I refuse to buy those during the school year so I make exceptions once in a while in the summer).
I went back to the store “ahhh-lone” last night and stocked us back up on real food. Fresh produce is back in the family! Hooray!
Of course, we still have a rather busy week ahead of us so our menu isn’t really any more exciting than last week. I guess it was the choice factor. I don’t like the limiting feeling of being stuck using ONLY what is in the pantry but if I go to the store and pick out meals from foods we normally have on hand, then I feel better. Here’s my plan for the week:
MONDAY (J has a baseball game at 5:30p.m.!)
Probably frozen pizza since we’ll be eating dinner at 4:30p.m. unless some sort of great motivation strikes between then and now.
TUESDAY (I am meeting friends take two…I went last week on the wrong day–oops!)
WEDNESDAY (We may go to a Kansas City Royals game…I’m still working on the details)
THURSDAY (J has a baseball game at 8:00p.m.!)
ham steak and baked sweet potatoes (G requested baked sweet potatoes last week when we were living out of the pantry/freezer)
Last week left me feeling again as though we’d fallen into a menu rut. Last night, I found myself going through the few cookbooks I keep around waiting for inspiration to strike. Have you tried any new recipes lately that were so outstanding you think even the world’s most picky family would enjoy them? I’m linking my plan up over at Menu Plan Monday at Orgjunkie.com. Go check it out if you are like me and in need of some menu planning inspiration!
