A Family Fable

31days My topic for the next 31 days (read more on my topic choice here) is one that is very close to my heart:  Family.  I’ve decided to start my series with a simple story about my grandfather on my dad’s side.

My grandparents.

My grandparents.

I never met him or my grandmother as both my father’s parents passed away long before I came along.  In fact, my dad’s mom died suddenly when he was just 3 years oldCan you imagine?

My father, age 3, at his mother's grave.

My father, age 3, at his mother’s grave.

My father was the youngest of 10 children, 12 really as he had two 1/2 step-siblings.  He had 8 sisters and 4 brothers.  Some of his siblings were old enough that they were no longer living at home when my grandmother passed away.  It was only him and some of his older sisters (I’m sure my older sister knows how many older sisters were left at home?).  Apparently, some of the town “busy-bodies” (actual word used in the story) decided that my grandfather had no business raising all those daughters without a woman around to help him and his girls were sent to live elsewhere.  The story goes that my grandfather simply did not rest until he had his daughters back under his roof and his family reunited.

Clearly, the man knew something about putting family first.  I wish I would have had the pleasure of knowing him in person rather than  from just a few stories.

Ohhh your grandfather sounds like such a sweet blessing of a man. I enjoyed your first post of the 31 Days and love the old picture. I can not wait to read more of your posts this month.

Thank you! I do wish I could find a few more old photos (I’ve been doing family research for a bit now) of him.
