Happy Homemaker Monday: Planning on Presidents’ Day

Do you have the day off in honor of George and Abe?  We are all home around here.  Hooray! Check back with me this afternoon and see if I’m still saying hooray complete with an exclamation point.  I did make a special breakfast just for the occasion (with some help from Pillsbury).

Unroll and Bake Flaky Cherry Turnovers

This week already has a less hurried and more relaxed feeling than last week.  However, I know it could change at any time and it will be much better if I already have a plan in place.  Many thanks to Sandra from Diary of a Stay At Home Mom for hosting the Happy Homemaker Mondays.

The Weather Outside

It snowed overnight and is about 12 degrees outside this morning.  Have I mentioned how excited I am that we are all at home today?  I still see a few snow flurries swirling about occasionally as I look out the window.   We seem to be in for a basic cold winter week around here until about Friday when it is supposed to warm to 38.

Currently

I’m working on this post and listening to the news that my husband is watching.  Thinking about how I would like to go back to bed as J woke me up twice overnight and the cat did not buy into the whole sleeping in for Presidents’ Day business.  Of course, she is now happily sleeping in my spot on the bed.

To-Do List Items

  1. Write and schedule a few blog posts
  2. Finish the laundry (quite a bit is already done)
  3. Clean off my computer desk
  4. Go to Bunco on Tuesday night
  5. Add G’s marching band practice schedule to my calendar
  6. Update my preschool bag with new books and make a plan for Friday (the only day I work so far…)

Menu Plan for the Week

I did my grocery shopping yesterday before the snow arrived so we are fairly well-set for the week.  As always, I’m linking up my plan with Menu Plan Monday hosted by Laura from I’m An Organizing Junkie.  Please go check it out for all kinds of meal planning ideas and inspiration.

We didn’t have the vegetable chili last Thursday and I have been craving it for two weeks now so I made some last night just for myself and the rest of them ate hot dogs (except J who is sick and did not eat).  They missed out!

Vegetable Chili

Vegetable Chili

Part of my menu this week is based around leftover buttermilk.  I bought a carton to make my husband’s birthday cake last week instead since some recipes should not be altered and all I had here was almond milk.

MONDAY

Ham, baked sweet potatoes

TUESDAY

Banana Beignets for breakfast but I’m substituting buttermilk for the whole milk.

Bunco night for mom!

Rosa Parks’ Featherlite Peanut Butter Pancakes and Sausage or Spaghetti (depends on how the day goes).

WEDNESDAY

Asian Lemon Chicken Tenders

THURSDAY

Sloppy Joes from a mix.  Husband’s request.

FRIDAY

I was brave and bought frozen cooked shrimp at the store yesterday plus popcorn shrimp (from a box) for the kids.  I plan to make it if I’m not too tired from work.  Otherwise, it will be frozen pizza and I’ll deal with the shrimp on Saturday.

Books and Television and another Movie!

I finally finished reading A Lion Among Men by Gregory Maguire.  I am very excited to read something different this week.  I have a new book to start, The First Phone Call From Heaven by Mitch Albom.  He’s one of my favorite authors so hopefully, I won’t be disappointed.  Wednesday night is my television night of the week lately when I’ll be watching The Goldbergs and then, The 100.  I have casually started watching How To Get Away With Murder on Thursday nights but it’s a case (ha!) of watching it if I happen to catch it and no big deal if I don’t see it.  The only reason I mention the movie my husband and I watched last night is to perhaps spare you the agony.  I am a fan of stupid comedy.  Dodgeball, Talladega Nights, and Tommy Boy are among my favorites.  However, I’m sorry to say Neighbors was just stupid.

Blog Posts and Plans

Hopefully, this week will be better in this area.  Basically, my plan is to do everything that I said I planned to do last week.

From the Camera

Not much on the camera on super busy weeks!  You can see some pictures I snapped of a lovely sunset sky over on my Instagram.  However, this is what the camera held last week, a picture of a small project day item that never happened (until yesterday afternoon):

Thoughts for the Week

A Good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.  (Irish Proverb)

This quote on Pinterest really caught my eye yesterday and made me stop and think on it:

Don’t wait for other people to be loving, giving, compassionate, grateful, forgiving, generous, or friendly…lead the way! (Steve Maraboli)

Create in me a pure heart. O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.  (Psalm 51:10)

****

What kind of week do you have planned?

I also saw that quote about a good cry and a long sleep. True, isn’t it?
I’ve been so far behind on my reading lately…glad to finally get over here and catch up a bit. Your turnovers look yummy. We had scramble eggs, by Kidzilla’s request. The kid LOVES eggs. She and the Hub are also off today and so they are home with me. I’m glad because it is frigid out there. More snow in the forecast tonight…perhaps they will be home again tomorrow. I’m hoping to get Zilla’s closet cleaned out today and get caught up on my blog reading.

I’m still way behind on my reading! Scrambled eggs sound wonderful. We’re all home together again today but only because both kids are sick and my husband is working strange hours this week. I’m really hoping the phone doesn’t ring for me today as I need another day at home.

38 degrees sounds like a slice of heaven, actually. We woke up to zero… yes, zero. Crazy cold, and it is supposed to be back in the single digits on Friday. So, I’m working around the house. I put new labels on my files, ran laundry, and got some paperwork done. Also trying to keep my exercise going as I NEED some endorphins! I also enjoy an organizing project, so I’m thinking about tackling a dresser in a spare room.

Our weather is sort of like a roller coaster. The snow was melting a bit yesterday afternoon and it’s 11 degrees this morning. Of course, it is still above zero at least. Sounds as if you are accomplishing a ton of things!

Sounds like the perfect weather for everyone to be home, warm and cozy. Those turnovers look pretty and delicious. My husband loves anything cherry so I may have to check out that recipe. I’m glad I was already planning on chili for tonight because your photo is making me crave some! Have a great week!

The turnovers weren’t really a recipe so much as a heat and eat box I purchased at the grocery store. I think homemade ones would have been much better!

The turnovers were fairly good. My husband thought they should have been baked a bit longer. Hope your week goes well also!

Dodgeball is great one! I was excited to see a commercial for Hot Tub Time Machine 2 last night. I imagine we will wait for video though. Thanks for the warm sunshine thoughts! The sun is shining this morning although it is still pretty cold.

They were on sale all over town for Valentine’s Day. I bet they are a lot closer to being in season by you though 🙂

We all had off on Monday as well. Totally took me by surprise on Friday evening while we were talking LOL Those extra days off always catch me. Odd too that my husband was also home for the day.

We were off and running then, to get this under the counter/cabinet radio/cd player, then to get a gift for Jenna to give to her friend for an upcoming b-day, then while getting that book I got to peek at the B&N sale books. LOVE those! Lots for a buck or two, and sometimes three. I also got to check out a Vinnie’s (junque store) that I hadn’t been to in a looooong while. So fun. I’m the ONLY one that didn’t get something there, but that’s ok.

We’re frigid here as well – something like 20 below windchill. Thankfully the kids DID have school today. Honestly, I don’t like those stay home cold days because it always gets people (my girls) wanting to go OUT! LOL

Wow, I’m tired after reading about your holiday of running. My boys are the exact opposite of your girls because stay home days (no matter the weather) are very literal things to them. They like to stay at home the entire home. It wears on me a bit. Thankfully, they are older now so I can get out by myself if I need a sanity break.
