Homemaker Monday and Menu Plan

I couldn’t quite bring myself to call this Happy Homemaker Monday as it is not a happy Monday, now Tuesday over here.  I wasn’t even sure if I was going to post today.  I’m still not sure I’ll hit the publish button.

I didn’t post at all last week because I was super busy with work until Friday.  I would have been just as busy on Friday but a family tragedy took precedence over work.   Our family is simply heartbroken about a young life that ended much too soon.

It was rainy and cold for most the weekend and as the cliché goes, when it rains, it pours.  J woke up puking around midnight on Friday and was up all night with the start of the stomach flu.  So far G and I have managed to avoid it but my husband was not so lucky and was up all night last night.     It hit G yesterday morning.  Frozen pizza will be off our menu plan for a while.  SIGH.  I seem to be the only one in the clear.  My husband thinks they all picked up food poisoning at a local cheap pizza buffet on Friday.  Our menu plan is going to be on the bland side this week, I think.

Here is my weekly plan although I’m not setting any high expectations given the circumstances.

The weather outside

It is chilly and in the 40s this morning (I’m in a sweatshirt) but supposed to be nice and warm by the middle of the week.

G is home with me but in his room, sleeping I hope.  J and my husband have returned to their normal work and school days.  I’m finishing my breakfast of a honey wheat bagel spread with Daiya strawberry cream cheese style spread.   I’m about to go get a bit more coffee as well.

To-Do List

  • Sanitize the entire house!  I will probably seriously focus on this task Thursday when I don’t have to work since I don’t want to overwhelm G with fumes while he is at home.
  • Order the teacher appreciation gifts
  • Still need to see about new glasses
  • Schedule a few blog posts…novel concept that I just can’t seem to complete on a consistent basis
  • Still need to do a bit of summer planning

Menu Plan

This should be less than interesting as obviously the appetites around here are on the slim side.  Cleaning up after stomach bug symptoms does things to a healthy person’s appetite as well.  So the meals are going to be on the light, bland, and easy side.    The picture below is from two weeks ago when everyone had appetites.

Sometimes you just need waffles with butter and maple syrup

MONDAY:  None of the boys or my husband ate dinner.  I had Chex Mix.

TUESDAY:  Either French Toast or Baked Potatoes  (I work until 6p.m. so will make ahead)

WEDNESDAY:  Grilled Cheese (plus tomato soup for me), chips unless I can find a bag of frozen French fries in the freezer, and cucumber slices  (I work until 6p.m. again)

THURSDAY:  Ham steaks for those that can handle it, watermelon or smoked turkey (already cooked from the grocery store), rice  (Visitation to attend)

FRIDAY:   I don’t anticipate cooking dinner but if I do, it will again be simple.  Perhaps BLT’s or Chicken and Spaghetti (I’m hoping appetites will be back by Friday).  (Funeral day)

Books, Television, and Movies

I re-read Mockingjay  last week thinking I would rent the movie but I haven’t yet.  Didn’t really watch much television last week except for the Wednesday night comedies.  Since the boys have been sick, I did end up watching a movie with each of them.  J wanted me to watch Peabody and Sherman with him on Saturday night.  I really did enjoy it.  They’d watched it at school during MAP testing last week so he also liked it if he wanted to see it again.  Yesterday, G and I watched Big Hero 6 based on the recommendation of a preschool student.  It was okay but I’m kind of glad my boys are mostly past the Disney movie stage.  Oh, and by myself I ordered and watched a movie called Safety Not Guaranteed.  I immediately renamed it good movie not guaranteed.  Oh, it was awful!  Since G is home with me again today, I told him we’d watch the final Hobbit movie today.  I clearly need a new book to read!

Blog Posts and Plans

I have some posts I’d like to write (seems silly to say that….uh, I wouldn’t have a blog if I had nothing to write) and would like to keep working on improving it.  I am scheduled to work quite a bit the next 2 weeks so we’ll see if I can balance all this.

From the Camera

I have nothing from last week.  These photos are actually from 2 weeks ago but I’m still going to share them.

I shared this one my Instagram account as well:

Thoughts for the Week

Sometimes there simply are no words…

There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.   (Hamlet, William Shakespeare)

Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.  (Plato)

Be still and know that I am with you (Psalm 46:10)

As always, I’m linking up with Sandra over at Diary of a Stay At Home Mom as well as Laura from I’m An Organizing Junkie. Please, click on the links and go visit their blogs as they have lots of great stuff on both.

Hoping everyone has a healthy and happy week ahead!

Thank you, Carrie. We didn’t end up watching the movie yesterday but there seems to be a bunch of rain on our horizon in the next few weeks so I’m sure we’ll see it soon.

I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

This is my favorite quote – I hope it brings you as much comfort as it brings me:

There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. (Hamlet, William Shakespeare)

Thank you, Elizabeth. That quote has been in my mind quite a bit lately. I confess though that I’ve never actually read Hamlet just the required Romeo and Juliet and Othello during a literature course. Perhaps I should add Hamlet to my reading list? I have seen the play (pretty sure one of our Doctors aka David Tennant portrays Hamlet in the version I caught on PBS…)
