I don’t know why I’m surprised to wake up to another cold morning. It is winter after all. I didn’t expect to see single digit temperatures again today. With our yo-yo weather, I figured it would be at least in the 20s since I slept in a bit. Nope, it’s another truly cold morning for us today.
I’m extremely grateful for this holiday edition of a Happy Homemaker Monday post and Menu Plan Monday. My husband was the only one who had to get up and go to work today. The rest of us were able to sleep in and not worry about having to be out and about in the cold.
I guess the first thing I should do is check the weather on this very cold morning (The silly cat still insisted on going outside!).
The Weather This Week
I see they’re calling for more snow (we had a surprise dusting on Saturday night) tomorrow with highs hitting the 30s. Maybe a bit warmer on the weekend. I’ve certainly been spoiled by the winter of temperatures in the 40s and 50s. I imagine I’m not the only one.
On the breakfast plate
So far nothing but coffee with a splash (a large splash) of almond milk. I’ll figure out something when the boys get up for the day.
The house is blissfully quiet. J is awake and playing the Wii U but has the sound low enough that I can’t hear it back here. The cat, quite offended by the cold morning, is back inside and settling down for a nap.
As I look around the house
It’s not terrible for all of us being home all weekend (mostly thanks to my husband) but definitely needs a serious cleaning to be up to company standard.
We didn’t follow last week’s menu plan exactly (does anyone ever do that?) so I have a carryover meal and I’m trying to figure out what we did eat instead of the shrimp last Wednesday. One other thought from last week’s plan was that the Panda Express orange chicken sauce was extremely salty! When my salt loving crew notices the salt, you’ve put in too much.
I’m hoping to do a bit better following the plan this week with no more “let’s just order a pizza” nights (we did use a coupon code at least). Also, again planning to make at least 2 meals using what we already have on hand in the pantry, fridge, and/or freezer.
MONDAY: Chicken Enchilada Soup (using frozen precooked chicken from freezer)
TUESDAY: Roast in the Crock pot (I may have Bunco…weather could be a factor)
WEDNESDAY: French Toast and Sausage (From freezer. If you’re thinking I have a lot of this in my freezer, I don’t. This is just the meal that gets scratched off very often. I’m determined to clear the freezer of it this week!) (G has a school activity so this will work out nicely)
THURSDAY: Mini Meatloaves, potatoes, and dinner rolls (Another carry over meal)
FRIDAY: Leftovers or OUT
New Recipe I tried
Two new ones last week. One dud and one that I’m sure would have been good had I been not grabbed the mint extract instead of the vanilla.
Buffalo Wing Pretzels weren’t a big hit. They weren’t bad just not good enough for a repeat showing. Also, J complained about the smell the entire time I had them in the oven.
The Mini M&M’s Blondie Recipe would have been great minus an unfortunate mix up with the extracts on my part. On a side note, I didn’t want to waste my efforts (or ingredients!) so I turned this recipe into mint chocolate chip brownies which weren’t too bad either.
I didn’t do so well last week so my top 5 is pretty much the same…
- Clean off this desk (TODAY)
- Go to library (Perhaps today if it warms up…)
- Get J started on a plan for school project due Thursday (G mentioned he had a project also)
- Make changes to my Cozi digital calendar. The preschool changed around some of the days and hours I work in the next few weeks and I updated our kitchen calendar but I’ve started to rely more on the Cozi app so need to change it as well. Look for my thoughts on this in a later this week.
- Call and reschedule my February hair appointment as I managed to double book myself on that day.
Books, Movies, and Television
I read 2 books last week! Both were e-books on my phone. Can you believe my teenager actually said something to the effect of he “preferred books with real pages” to me? I finished up my Amazon Prime free e-book choice of The Moonlit Garden by Corina Bomann and ended up liking the book quite a bit more than my initial reaction. It ultimately had a good story line and a solid ending. I felt like I was on the journey with the main characters. I also read How to Blog for Profit without Selling Your Soul by Ruth Soukup, I ordered this for free back in September but just now read it. I liked her no-nonsense approach to it. I found lots of ideas and solid advice although it did seem aimed at much bigger bloggers at times. If blogging is your main job, I would definitely say this one is worth your time to read.
Is it possible we didn’t watch any movies last week? I think so. Wow, that is unusual for us. My husband and I have been watching The Blacklist on Netflix (we won’t talk about how many times I’ve said, SEE, I CAN pick out a good show!) and enjoying it. We also won’t talk about the Chiefs loss on Saturday. Funny the tag line in these parts used to be: When does football season start? and now it has become…When does baseball season start? I’m also excited for the second half of The Flash series to return Tuesday night (although I have Bunco so I’ll have to watch it on Wednesday) and the finale of Heroes Reborn on Thursday night.
