Happy Homemaker Monday, Welcome 2018!

A bit of slow start around here after staying up much too late to see 2017 properly out the door.  While the Black-eyed peas simmer and the wassail warms up in the crock pot, I’m writing my first post of 2018.

Black-eyed peas to bring luck and prosperity in the new year.

Finally making the wassail, a Swedish health drink according to my cook book

Can’t think of a better way to start my blog writing in the new year than with a Happy Homemaker Monday post. I’m so glad Sandra (our host over at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom) decided to put one up on her blog today.

The Weather

COLD. Our actual temperature read -3 degrees upon waking this morning. We’ve now warmed up to a balmy 6 degrees. The sun’s shining brightly though.  Cold and clear, we’re going to hit the low 20 degree mark later in the week and my app shows 39 degrees with a 50% chance of something (snow/rain/mix?) for next Sunday. We’ll see…

Right Now I Am

Wondering if I should just stay in my pajama bottoms all day. I did throw on a sweatshirt earlier so I could go outside and freeze a bubble (and myself!). Not quite as exciting as the news might have implied.

Thinking

About how I’m not ready for the boys’ Christmas break to end (they go back to school on Wednesday) and hoping this year doesn’t go at the same insanely fast speed as last year. Okay, I’ll just admit it, I’m also hoping for a surprise giant snowstorm. Yes, me, lover of all things summer, wants some fluffy white snow to go along with our freezing weather (though I’d have no complaints if it warmed up a teeny bit).

On My Reading Pile

Planning to make a list of at least 18 books I’d like to read in 2018.  Need to inspire myself to do better in the reading category. For today and tomorrow, I’ll probably just finish looking at the December/January magazine issues and check out the Amazon Prime Kindle First Editions.

On My TV

I’ve been watching season 2 of my science fiction show, The Travelers on Netflix.  Also, I finished season 3 of Fuller House over the weekend. Really hope they get a season 4, there aren’t enough shows with that silly, campy style anymore. I miss it.

Favorite Blog Post This Week (Mine or Other)

Glad to see this category back.  I did read a few blog posts over the weekend worth sharing but this one from my blogging friend Lisa, over at The Meaning Of Me was my favorite: Life Goes On-Open Thought Vortex

On The Menu For This Week

Let me join in the collective echo on the Internet saying, our meals will be healthy, budget meals based on our pantry offerings.  Think I’ve been saying that for a while.  Hmm…

MONDAY:  Ham, Black-Eyed Peas (this recipe, we eat it as dip), and Salad. Plus left-over desserts from last night (chocolate pie and a pink champagne cake from the grocery store).

TUESDAY: Copy cat Chik-Fil-A sandwiches, chips, left-over veggie tray from NYE (probably left-over chili for J who’s not a Chik-Fil-A fan, where oh where did we go wrong with that child?)

WEDNESDAY:  Tacos (the boys’ first day back at school)

THURSDAY: Finally going to put those pork chops in the crock pot!

FRIDAY: baked spaghetti

On My To Do List

  1. Take inventory in the kitchen cabinets, freezer, and pantry (I’m working my way through a meal planning challenge)
  2. Grocery store (hoping for a tiny trip!)
  3. Put away the rest of the Christmas decorations
  4. Get e-mail under control (figure out how to turn off a few notifications)
  5. Complete another free Sugar Detox Challenge

What I Am Sewing, Knitting, Or Creating

Trying to figure out something to make the kitchen table look a little more cheerful but not like Christmas.

Looking Around The House

It looks like we’ve been on a break but there are places to sit in the living room so I’m going to call it okay. Massive decluttering starts tomorrow.

From The Camera

More bird feeder birds.

On My Prayer List

Family, Friends, Strangers.

Quote For The Week

From my new 2018 calendar (a much-loved birthday present!):

*****

Thanks for reading my blog, hope all my readers had a wonderful New Year and 2018 brings you lots of happy moments, both big and small.

Aw, thank you! What a kind thing to say. I’m not a huge fan of black eyed peas either but I’ve been making this recipe for a few years now (it’s more like salsa with a few black eyed peas mixed into it): Spicy Black-Eyed Peas (a couple notes: I mix the bacon in with it and use a bit less onion, also I let it simmer quite a bit longer than it calls for to cook the water out as I like it it to be less like soup and more like a salsa and then serve it with tortilla chips. Hope you had a wonderfully happy New Year!

Always enjoy reading your posts, Jean. I, too, wish we’d either get some snow or just move right on into warmer weather…but not too hot! 😀 We’re getting ready for another clean-up-the-food challenge here, too. I plan on doing a food inventory tomorrow. Have a blessed New Year, my friend! May 2018 be the best year yet!

Thank you. I need to do a food inventory as well (and a big junk food/too much Christmas candy/is this stuff still good? dump into the trash as well). Hope you have a wonderful week and of course, a wonderful year in 2018 as well!

I agree it is always nice meeting new friends. My day was more productive than cozy but that’s okay, it was much needed. I’ll try to have a cozy day tomorrow 🙂

Ha, that was unintentional! I’m just sitting down this morning to work on my list. I have a few in my mind but need to refine my list and publish a blog post with them.

Sorry I am running so late. LMBO at your “wishing for snow” comment, When we lived up north I was always the same way – if you’re going to be cold anyway, might as well be pretty! I love those bird feeder photos. I’ve eaten some of your black eyed peas “VIRTUALLY” for 2018 luck! Have a great week.

Yes, I would much rather have a pretty day of snowflakes today than the rain we’re getting. At least, it did warm up a bit for us and is in the low 30s. Hope those virtual black eyed peas bring you lots of luck in 2018!
