Christmas specials and movies are great part of the season. Here are the all-time favorites of my family plus a few other special mentions. We own all the favorite titles on DVD.
My husband’s favorite Christmas (?) movie: Die Hard
We actually gifted this to him last Christmas when we noticed it missing from our Christmas movie DVD collection. He also really enjoys National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
My oldest son’s (G) favorite Christmas movie: Elf
My youngest son’s (J) favorite Christmas movie: Home Alone
We watched many viewings of that one during his preschool years.
My favorite Christmas movie (I should mention no one else in my family likes this one, even going so far as to call it a bit creepy *eye roll from me*): The Polar Express
Love the book, love the movie, love the concept. And I can’t help but think things in Santa’s “The first gift of Christmas!” voice as I prepare for our holiday.
Honorable Movie mention:
For a long time, It’s A Wonderful Life was my favorite Christmas movie and it still holds a special place in my heart. My Christmas season certainly wouldn’t be complete without watching George Bailey become the “richest man in town.” It holds a few sad memories though of watching alone as my parents were off looking after sick relatives so I can’t really call it a complete favorite.
Silly, Weird, Fun Offbeat Stuff We’ve Watched And Enjoyed:
On Netflix (not sure if they’re still there, you know Netflix!):
Santa Claws: a sweet little movie about a Santa allergic to cats and a cute group of kittens who take over his sleigh plus the mom who doesn’t believe, etc.
Petterson and Findus 2: A man and his cat worry about finding a tree and being alone on Christmas. Subtitled.
Watched once on Netflix and then, gone:
Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger: A fun British film (with David Tennant!) about a school’s musical production. Just noticed the original is now available on DVD so I’ve ordered that up to see if I like it as well.
Rented at Redbox long ago (kids were quite young, J was in preschool still):
Gotta Catch Santa Claus: An animated flick about some older kids (middle school?) who attempt to catch Santa Claus to prove his existence. And of course, there’s the villain who’s out to stop Santa as well. Plus, you really can’t go wrong with William Shatner voicing Santa!
There are lots more I enjoy but I don’t want to write any more than you probably want to read an 10,000 word blog post. What are your holiday favorites?
