I found myself startled by a little bird landing just about a foot away from me on the branch while setting out the suet feeder. We studied each other for a moment.
And I realized my curious little friend was a downy woodpecker fledgling!
We’ve loved watching the fledgling hang out around the suet feeder. Is it my turn again yet? Keeps dad busy! Dad chased it away from the annoying sparrows. And played peek-a-boo. To say we’ve been charmed watching this little family around the suet feeder understates it.
I’ll share just two more photos.
Other birds I spotted this week included brown headed cowbirds (ugh), grackles, robins, starlings, cardinals, chickadees, tufted titmice, mourning doves, and our usual house finches along with the sparrows. And how could I forget, our suet feeding blue jay? Reminds me…is it just here or are these birds around the suet feeder getting furrier all the time? I say it every week but it may indeed be time to bring in the suet feeder for the summer. I said it shortly after the squirrel but then the downy fledgling arrived. I’ve not seen the downy woodpeckers today so perhaps when this suet block goes, I’ll take down the feeder for the summer. (It’s getting a bit tedious trying to remember to bring it in each night as well.)
