The Result of My Follow Through Friday: A Saturday Success Story

Yesterday, I decided I needed a Follow Through Friday to try to motivate myself to catch up on a few tasks.  So in keeping with the Follow Through Friday theme, today is my Saturday Success Story (or not).  SaturdaySuccesspic1 So was I successful yesterday? 

I am going to say yes!

  • I took the 5 minutes (probably less) it required and paid our car payment on-line.  So no more worries I’ll forget about it.  It’s done.
  • I left the house and went shopping!  I went to 3 stores, one of them twice.  J.C.Penny provided shirts for my boys plus part of a baby shower gift for my niece.
  • I delegated the researching of the ants to J.  He figured out we do indeed have something called thief ants yet again.  If I could only remember how we got rid of them last time.  It looks like I need to buy some cinnamon from what I’ve read so far. At least they’re contained to the pantry.

One thing I’ve noticed is if I give myself 3 tasks to actually finish, I often go ahead and take care of other tasks not on the list.  Yesterday, I also managed to get the rest of the school supplies off of G’s list and an anniversary card for my husband.  Of course, cleaning the house would have been taking things a bit too far.

Saturday Success Stories, Three Cheers!

It’s been too long since I’ve been able to declare a complete success in regards to my Follow Through Friday tasks.   Today, I get to do just that!  Three cheers for three tasks completed!  I had a long and somewhat stressful day so I didn’t really expect that I would manage any of the tasks.   However, by keeping them simple, I was able to get the tasks done in a fairly short amount of time.  It is nice to feel like I made a small amount of progress.  Here are the details:
  1. Fill out the microchip registry for the cats.

    Guess what?  I apparently had already begun to the process at some point so my contact information was there.  That made this task a bit of a cheat, I suppose.  I did go ahead and update the pet profile page which was not complete for either cat.  I also uploaded pictures of our cats.  Hopefully, I’ll never need to make use of the registry but it is ready to go now.

  2. Mail the Netflix DVD back.

    I did this at 10:45p.m. last night on my way to pick up my son from a church function.  I did get the envelope ready to go and put it in the car earlier in the evening though.

  3. I also spent some time updating my PTA notebook.  It is not finished but I did not have finishing this as a goal.  My main goal was to take out all the extra papers and a few personal notes.  I have a nice pile of “recycle” papers now.  I simply need to add new calendars and tabs for the next person now.

I would probably feel more accomplished if I weren’t still super tired from yesterday (not from the 3 tasks) and looking around at the scary status of the house.  A morning cleaning is definitely on the agenda!  How did you do on your to-do list?

Stress-Free Week Attempt, Starting Successful on Monday

Striving for a stress-free week is probably a lofty goal.  I’m going to try it anyway.

I know that when things get busy, they also tend to get stressful.  Stress and busy might appear together often but they don’t mix well.  It is possible to have a relatively stress-free week.  I know that I tend to cope better with the unplanned things that come up during a busy week when I feel more stress-free than stressed out about my life.  One way to set things up for a stress-free week is to plan.


I know I’ve mentioned before how grateful I am that Felicia over at Felicia’s Red Door Life hosts the Starting Successful on Monday link-up but it is worth repeating.  It is such a huge help in inspiring me to actually plan out my weeks.  Whether you have a super busy week or an easy week ahead, I think you will be very surprised at what a difference just having a weekly plan in place can make.  You can use my plan layout as a guide or do your own thing, just find a way of weekly planning that works for you and don’t forget to go link-up and offer some encouragement to others if you are a blogger!

Keeping calm and stress-free.  Hopefully, I won’t let myself get too stressed out about not getting stressed!

The Weather this Week:

We are supposed to get snow today and then, there is a chance of thunderstorms on Thursday.  Can you guess which one I’m more excited to see in the forecast?


I’m trying very hard to finish this post so that I can clean up the kitchen, go to the local bread store to get hamburger buns, and still be ready when my friend arrives.  We are going to Trader Joe’s today!  I’m super excited since it has been a while since I’ve been there.  It’s also been a while since I’ve had a chance to hangout with my friend so I’m also excited about that.

To Do List:

Another crazy, busy week is on the horizon so once again, the list is be necessity short and sweet to keep things stress-free.

MONDAY:  publish menu plan post (DONE), weekly planning post (IN PROGRESS), go grocery store (x 2), clean out fridge, clean cat boxes, and finish up the laundry.

TUESDAY: publish menu planning failure post (needs to be scheduled today), work, get G to his activity, and confirm spring break plans

WEDNESDAY: publish what’s going on Wednesday post about what is in my preschool bag, get J to baseball practice, and do a homework check with both boys

THURSDAY:  publish blog post (I have an idea but no title yet…), spend 15 minutes cleaning each room in the house, get J to baseball practice

FRIDAY:  publish Follow Through Friday post and complete the 3 tasks listed in the post, make plans if needed to keep the boys from spending their entire Spring Break in front of screens

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen

I’m well into the “how-to” part of this book and picking up lots of ideas that I can’t wait to implement.  So far his 2 minute rule has been the favorite thing I’ve read.  If it takes 2 minutes or less to do it, just do it now.  Sounds a bit familiar and yet I love that there is a time limit (flexible, of course) there.  That’s always been one reason I struggled with the whole “do it now” principle.  I think this book is going to be quite helpful.

Halfway There, Saturday Success Stories

I feel like I had a pretty successful Follow Through Friday although I’m only about halfway there on my list of three items.  I’m caught up enough not to feel overwhelmed but I know I have a lot more to do.
SaturdaySuccesspic1 For once, I am not completely to blame for my lack of getting all the items on my list done.  I really wasn’t my fault although that doesn’t make me feel much better about not completing the task.  Here is how and why or why not I completed (or did not complete) my tasks:
  1. I did catch up on replying to blog comments here but sadly, I didn’t get to visit many of my favorite blogs as I had planned.  This one really wasn’t my fault though.  Our internet went down yesterday afternoon and stayed out except in tiny spurts for most of the night.   The timing was really not fun as having it go down right as G walked in from school really set his attitude to “grumpy” for the rest of the evening.  Grumpy attitudes can be contagious.

  2. I was pleased with the progress I made it this area!  Again, it is not completely done but it is to a point where I can look around here without getting that anxious feeling.  I mopped the living room including under all the furniture as well as the kitchen.

    I also cleaned out the kitchen trash can as I noticed something had spilled under the bag when I was taking out the trash.  Once I started to clean the bathrooms, I had a the Grinch thought where I got “a wonderful, awful idea” and remembered I had two minions to help me with all these chores.  Guess what my two boys will be doing later today?

  3. I did a fair job filling the recycle bin with excess papers.  I still didn’t do as well as I could have with this task but there are fewer papers on the desk.  The truth is I need to come up with a better system for dealing with all these excess papers.  I am getting lots of ideas for that from the book I am currently reading (I read quite a bit in it last night with the internet down), Getting Things Done, The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen.

So I didn’t have the most productive day ever yesterday and yet, I still feel as if I accomplished enough to be about halfway there on my list.  I can easily finish up the remaining tasks (well, maybe not developing an entire system for dealing with all my papers) today and still have time to throw the rest of that grass seed down as well as take G’s clarinet to the music store for repairs.  Did you get further than halfway there on your list yesterday?

Saturday Success Stories, I Did Stuff

Ever have one of those days where you get a lot of stuff done but it wasn’t exactly the stuff you planned on getting done that day?  That is pretty much the synopsis of yesterday.   SaturdaySuccesspic1
I started off super-motivated to get all those items completed and then, as always, the day threw me a bit of a curve-ball.  I ended up going to help pack up the school book fair in the middle of the day which was definitely not on my to-do list for the week.  It really shouldn’t have been that big of a deal but it ended up taking twice as long as usual due to a couple of unforeseen events.  By the time I returned home, I was pretty much done.  I did get a brief spark of productivity around 8:30p.m. but it fizzled out fast.  Over all, here is how I did on my 3 tasks.  (I even have a few pictures this time!)
  1. I completed this task!  The boys reactions to it were funny.  G returned home from school and said, “Never put anything back on the refrigerator.”  I think he was happy with the new clutter-free look.  J finally noticed it and quickly began putting magnets back on the front faster than I could put them out of sight.  He doesn’t do as well with change.  Here are some before and after photos:

    It’s certainly not “Pinterest pretty” but it is done.  I’m so happy I no longer have to feel guilty about not putting Box-tops on that flyer from November!

  2. Purging those piles of papers is where I struggled.  The couches are cleared off, the magazine bin is sorted (not on the list but I did it anyway), the floor is clear, and the papers from the refrigerator are sorted.  The papers by this desk?  Well, I still have much sorting to do.  I do have a small “to file” pile that didn’t exist before so I’m making progress.

    I know it doesn’t look better but it IS an improvement.

  3. I used my burst of energy at 8:30p.m. to work on this task and fill in the March calendar in my blogging notebook.  I also filled out some other pages.  Did you notice I changed the blog background color?  That’s about as fancy as my technical ability allows at this point.  I did that one yesterday afternoon.  I also wrote an extra blog post yesterday.  You can see it here if you missed it.

Here is a small list of some of the other stuff I did:  gave neighbor back the snack her son left here on Wednesday, folded 2 loads of laundry plus washed all the  Steam mop pad things,  participated in a Facebook Hop on the wrong date (SIGH), went to Target, helped with the school book fair, made tacos, mopped the kitchen floor, and wondered with J why his friend was taking so long to show up for the sleepover we had planned.  I suppose I get to wear my mom of the year badge today because after I checked on things, it turned out the sleepover was planned for next weekend.  Dates are important.
