Low-Spend, Low-Sugar September: Week 3 Notes

Hoping this is a better week than the last one!

The morning already started off a bit rough. Didn’t sleep well, lots of bickering, and still tired as I need to head off to work in a few minutes.  


Overall, not a terrible day. Back to drinking my peppermint and lemon water. Not sure my little vials of oil will last. Of course, buying some more puts me at odds with the low-spend part of the month.

Didn’t eat any huge sugary snacks so we’ll call that day a win. Not sure how much sugar a QT pretzel contains (dinner for all of us, pantry project took all our kitchen counter space making cooking pretty much impossible).


At least, I’m off to a decent start on the low-sugar thing. Eggs for breakfast, summer sausage, cheese & crackers (tiny ones) for lunch. Another glass of peppermint and lemon water today.

Would like to go shopping today.


Ended up going grocery shopping last night (not the kind of shopping I wanted to do) and somehow way over the budget! I’m going to review my receipt later as I usually don’t go over my budget by so much ($20!) and only mainly shopped the edges last night. Think there were buy this & get free items that they charged me for instead. May be going back for a refund. Or, I over did things.

Today, I need to venture to Target so that should be a good challenge. We’re out of some household items. Sam’s club might go on the list as well since our bottled water is running low but hopefully, that one can hold off until the weekend.

Thinking of making a list of things I’ve wanted to buy but haven’t: Fresh flowers for kitchen table, boots I saw on a Facebook ad (I’ll need some come winter), pretty much everything in the Bath & Body works e-mails, lots of Chiefs stuff at the grocery store….

No worries about sugar too much this morning. Ate something for lunch yesterday (I think it was too old summer sausage) that did my stomach in for the night. Had pancakes with the boys so not the best dinner choice but had to eat a little something.  Bunco tonight so I’ll just try not to overdo.


The end of last week went by in a bit of a blur.

Pretty sure I worked every day. I need to keep better track. Schedules were switched around on me a bit which gets confusing.

One of my husband’s clients gave him some Neiman Marcus cookies that he didn’t care for much. Of course, I liked them. They were super rich so I took half of one to work each day.

On a positive note, I did turn down the extra cookie from a birthday celebration at work.

Didn’t do awful on the spending. Went to Target and only bought a candy bar (yes, not doing great on the low-sugar thing) extra. Can’t remember the last time I went to Target alone and only bought 3 items.

Also, lost track of doing the peppermint lemon water again. Maybe I’ll have a glass today though just peppermint water as I’m out of lemon.


Glad this is the last full week!  I’ll probably give this low-spend, low-sugar thing another try in a less busy season. Does such a season even exist? Maybe January….


Low-Spend, Low-Sugar September: Notes From Week 2

On to week 2! Really enjoyed the wedding cake on Saturday night though I found it a tad sweet.

Plans for this week include continuing with the peppermint/lemon water and finding an easy activity (and time for it). My walk around the block buddy isn’t as enthused now that it’s marching season.  



I wanted muffins for breakfast on Sunday but 17 grams of sugar! And my beloved Crunchy Granola Raisin Bran…about the same! Ended up with toast and leftover sausage.

Also had a few squares of a dark chocolate & cherry candy bar (before I’d have eaten the whole bar so the fact a lot of it remains in the freezer is a win).

Spent more at the grocery store than intended but I also took advantage of a big sale and stocked up on a few snack items for the boys.  Think the trick will be to say “there will always be another sale” to myself. A lot.


Woke up feeling refreshed. Hasn’t happened in a long time.

Still 2.5 above the bad number for Monday morning. Bought some low-sugar apple cinnamon oatmeal at the store last night. So it was nice to have a different breakfast from eggs.


I’m not sure what happened the rest of the week. Somewhere around Wednesday I hit a bump on the low-sugar thing. Not a small one either, more like a bounce out of the wagon, roll down the hill kind of bump.  Worked more than I anticipated but I don’t think that was the main cause.

Just a bit of a bickering week with the spouse and food’s my emotional thing. Lettuce leaves aren’t as soothing as a few vanilla wafers.

The spend part was okay for these days. Didn’t buy anything extra besides another bag of apple chips and some individual apple chip bags on sale (great to take to work!).

Didn’t drink my lemon peppermint water these days either.


Worked all day on Friday, bought Subway on the way home (football game day tradition).

Saturday, we woke up to ants in the pantry! UGH. So the plan to clean out the freezers turned into to cleaning out the pantry. It’s all still sitting on the kitchen table while the Terro does its thing.

Low-Spend, Low-Sugar out the window yesterday as I had to go the hardware store for the ant baits. Somehow, I didn’t make it past the 50% off bird feeders. G and I also went out to lunch at Slim Chickens. My husband worked & J didn’t want to leave the house (wiped out from band) so we grabbed him McDonald’s before we left.


Not a great week 2. However, I’m not giving up just yet. Woke up and had eggs & spinach plus toast this morning (nice lower sugar breakfast) and am back to drinking my peppermint/lemon water.

Noticed I do much better all around on days when I’ve slept well.

A stack of bills to pay this week will hopefully curb the spending itch a bit & maybe I’ll finally get our freezer cleared out some.



Low-Spend, Low-Sugar September: Notes From Week 1

Happy Sweet September to you! I’m really hoping for a sweet month despite its lack of sugar. And I really thought I had an extra day. Turns out our month started on a Sunday, not on Monday.

While I’m not completely sure I am going to make these notes public (I probably will), my plan is to make little notes each day for each week of my Low-Spend, Low-Sugar month.

DAY 1 (Sunday, September 1):

My starting date for hopefully feeling better and maybe losing a pound or two along the way.

Starting weight: 4.5 over the “bad” number.  (I know the number but sorry, some things are too personal to share)  Also worth noting, skin is a bit of a mess and I have itchy patches on my legs.

Starting mood: tired, feel like a slight sore throat lingers in the background along with a slight headache.

A bit of inspiration in the shower: I’m going to treat this month as an “at-home” spa retreat! They wouldn’t feed me crappy, sugar-laden food at one of those (I’ve never been but I don’t think they would do that).

We ate out for dinner. Belated anniversary dinner at a Japanese steak house. Spent some money for that.

DAY 2 (Monday, September 2):

Not a great start to things today. Couldn’t pass up the kettle corn. Or the frozen lemonade. And had one of the Nutter butter cookies my husband bought.

Did eat more fruit than I’ve been (and no, I’m not counting the lemonade as fruit). Still have the sore throat, fighting it today.

Drank my peppermint and lemon water this morning. Drinking more water.

DAY 3 (Tuesday, September 3):

Today was a bit easier probably because I worked most of it. Sore throat still. Drank the peppermint and lemon water this morning. Drinking unsweetened tea tonight because summer’s back!

Went to Sam’s club, necessary expense. Water for husband’s work/kid lunch, managed to keep the crazy impulse purchases to minimum. A win since I went right before dinner. A bag of pure apple chips. Just apples. Not counting out fruit in this low/no sugar thing.

Craving root beer. Weird. Yes.

DAY 4 (Wednesday, September 4):

Forgot to mention yesterday, a great incentive for a low-spend September: a check in the mail! Checked out the Missouri treasurer unclaimed property office website & found I had $9 sitting there. Technically, $9 and 1 cent but I didn’t worry about the 1 cent.  Happy surprise since I  didn’t expect anything. Worth checking out. I would think there’d be something similar for most states.

Also, J, the kid who hardly ever wants to go anywhere, asked me to take him to Target last night. No extra purchases for me. A win!

Set my mouth on fire a bit this morning putting a jalapeno pepper from the garden in my eggs (and two cherry tomatoes!). Still drinking the peppermint/lemon water.

DAY 5 (Thursday, September 5)/DAY 6 (Friday, September 6):

My work schedule changed a bit and I lost a day somewhere this week. Yesterday was the only day I didn’t drink my peppermint/lemon water. Started my day too early for it, worked starting at 7:30 a.m.

Thursday I forgot and had French toast bites for dinner with the sausage and scrambled eggs (cleaning out upstairs freezer).  Also, ended up drinking a Coke at the football game last night to stay awake (see 7:30 a.m. work starting time referenced above.)

DAY 7, Saturday Morning Thoughts:

Not a perfect start to my low-spend, low-sugar month but not bad considering how much sugar consuming and spending (My last Bath and Body Works splurge box arrived yesterday) I’d been doing lately.  And, the scale registered just 2.5 lbs above the bad number this morning!

Do I feel better? I’ll tell the truth. This morning, I feel tired and grouchy. Not enough sleep. We have a wedding to attend to tonight and I will eat a piece of wedding cake. Wedding cake is not an everyday thing and I intend to enjoy it.

Next week, I’ll continue my cleaning out the fridge as part of the low-spend journey and try again to merge it with the low-sugar month.

Planning for a Spend-Less and Sugar Free September

Turns out, I tried a Spend Less September two years ago. Even wrote a couple of blog posts. And made a graphic for it.  

One post focused on my plans for achieving my spend less month. The other, a summary of the first week. After that, well, life happened. No other posts appear.

This time around, hopefully a lot more success, and because I am insane just for fun I’m combining my spend less month with a sugar-free month.  

Trying to get back into all sorts of good shape for the fall season I suppose. Technically, I guess this should be called a sugar-less September because I’m not giving up all sugar (still doing fruit and bits of super dark chocolate).

So let’s talk about it.

Why a Spend-Less September?

The other fall/winter months are heavy on the expenses around here: Fall birthdays, Winter birthdays (waving to everyone!), Christmas, Annual bills (Hello, Missouri property taxes).

September falls evenly between the crazy expenses of back to school and the beginning of the fall, falling of dollars off our money trees.

Seems like a great time to try to break my (not proud) Bath and Body Works on-line ordering habit. Wish they’d quit sending me all the great deals!

And I don’t know what’s been going on with my grocery shopping lately but the total at the register and the total my budget allows….not even close to each other. We should be well-stocked to survive a grocery bill cut (I hope, anyway!).

What I’ll buy during my Spend-Less September:

Tickets to football games and marching band competitions (a given expense with a kid in the band) plus food when out-of-town for those events and gas to get there.

Groceries to round out what is already in the fridge, freezer, and pantry.  And lunch stuff for J.

Household items such as shampoo and toilet paper if needed.

Why A Sugar Free September?

I’ve been eating too much of it lately and my clothes are a bit too snug

I know I feel better when I don’t eat a lot of sugar

Time to work on being healthy

My Sugar Free Plans:

Drink at least 1 glass of water with peppermint and lemon each day

Fruit for dessert instead of junk

More time outside
